The Well is helping people back into the workplace by providing teaching in catering techniques and then allowing them to test their practical skills in the kitchen and cafe. Candidates spend three hours on Saturday mornings doing the acedemic learning and then work in its kitchens and cafe for a few hours during the week. For Lisa Crossley, 24, it should provide a way back into catering after she dropped out of a Highbury College course. "I help with the cooking, the washing-up and preparing food," she said. "I like all of it and I'm really learning. It's a very supportive place to work and I hope it will lead on to a full time job somewhere." Dave Phillips, 50, is also gaining valuable experiance in working the till, food hygiene and health and safety issues. I'm between jobs, so I'm hoping this will get me back into employment in future," he said. "I enjoy working the tills and talking to customers. I'm certainly more aware of what goes on in a place like this now" he National Open College Network qualification only lasts four weeks. Several groups of students have already completed their courses and the next starts soon. The first set of students included two teenagers from Baycroft Special School on day release, youngsters from the Fareport Training Organisation and jobless people enrolling on New Deal schemes. June Haye, the manager of The Well, said: "It's been a great benefit to all of the students, because thy are learning about employment as well as what to do inthe kitchen. And it's cetainly helped us out as they have been eager to help." Since we have started the Open Network Course around thirty young people have gained qualifications at Level 1 Food Hygiene, Customer Care and Health and Safety. We are now working towards NVQ qualifications at Level 2 and hope this qualification will be available soon.

The Fair Trade products continue to be very popular. A number of our local churches take Fair Trade goods for stalls in churches and also some local schools sell our Fair Trade items. Look out for and support these if you can. If your church or organisation would like to run a stall, pop in and have a chat about how this works. We can also order Fair Trade items and the latest catalogues are available in the shop.

Traid Craft stall at St Johns

We are available in the evenings for pre booked events. We are also considering an evening each week when local teenagers could come in for a coffee, chat and music. Of course this requires people willing to offer their time to run the evening. If you might be interested in this why not pop in and have a chat about it.

A big thank you to the guys from HMS Collingwood who gave their time to help with the painting
